COEGA BUSINESS CENTRE July 2008

An original sculpture by the artist Ruth Nesbit was enlarged five times. This was then moulded in silicon rubber and the first casting in wax was manipulated by the artist to create the female of the pair. Two full-scale waxes were then cast into bronze using the ceramic shell lost wax process. These were then boltde together, patenated, and installed at the new Coega Business Centre. The work was done by a team of staff and students from the sculpture department in conjunction with the artist.

HAPPY VALLEY 1996 - 2008

Happy Valley is a recreation area created along the banks of the Shark River which empties into Algoa Bay at the Blue Flag Humewood Beach. The sculpture department and its students were invited in 1996 to propose a new approach to presenting three-dimensional areas of interest to children. The negotiated result was the representation of traditional nursery rhymes and characters as well as much-loved characters and creatures from the popular entertainment media such as The Lion King and Finding Nemo - even Harry Potter and the characters of Hogwarts have found a home here. This on-going community project is conducted in conjunction with the municipality through the offices of the Beach Manager.

CONSERVATION IN THE PARK

The Prince Alfred War Memorial that stands upon the water reservoir in St Georges Park was restored in 2005. A team from the sculpture department repaired the terracotta features and introduced expansion joints to the balastrading and pond walls in order to conserve this cultural feature for posterity.
